CD Rom and a Mac IIcx?
Re: Mac Plus & Modems

Subject: SE/30 video card question
From: Michael Stone

I have an SE/30, and would like a second monitor. Probably the standard Apple RGB monitor. Where might one find a cheap (possibly used) card for this purpose?

Thanks,
Mike Stone

Subject: CD Rom and a Mac IIcx?
From: Todd Griffith

How fast of a cd rom (2,4,8,10,12X) can I use with a Mac IIcx (20/100) before the IIcx becomes the bottleneck? I have seen some cd roms require 68040s. Is this really true for acceptable playback?

Thanks Todd

Yes, & No. A MacPlus can use any speed modem (With the appropriate hardware handshaking cable if high speed) through it's modem port. However, I believe that the Global Village modem piggy-backs through the ADB port for it's power source, so with the Plus you're without any way for it to get juice. The Plus has no ADB port. Any modem with an external power source will work. If you have any trouble finding one I can help you out with a Zoom faxmodem & software for a song.

Again, Yes & No. The ROM's on the Plus's motherboard only enable it to access 4 MBs of RAM. It is possible to obtain some 3rd party accellerators for the Plus (@$200), but you might as well shop around and invest that same $ in a Classic II or an SE/30.

Where are you going to school? I recently graduated from LSU Law School where I was the resident Mac guru. Glad to help any way I can.
