I have an SE with 4 megs of ram and 2 800K drives. I also have a 100 meg external SCSI drive. During the boot process I get a message that says Radius Accelerator 16, Version 2.0, 881. Can anyone tell me what this accelerator is? Does it have a 68020 or 68030 on it?

As far as I know it's a 68020 at 16 Mhz + a 68881 at 16mhz co-processor. There's a child connector on it which lets you connect a radius video card to control a 15 '' black and white monitor.

Can anyone suggest some way I can install a 1.44 drive on this computer?

It's impossible unless you change your SE motherboard.

Subject: SE Accelerator
From: bearingman

I have an SE with 4 megs of ram and 2 800K drives. I also have a 100 meg external SCSI drive. Apparently I have an accelerator installed (I have not had this machine very long and have not worked up the courage to crack the case). During the boot process I get a message that says Radius Accelerator 16, Version 2.0, 881. I know that there is a FPU installed, presumably on the Radius card, because when I installed Excel it said it detected an FPU. I have several questions.

Can anyone tell me what this accelerator is? Does it have a 68020 or 68030 on it? Can I run some version of System 7 on this computer? Can anyone suggest some way I can install a 1.44 drive on this computer?

Thanks for you help and input.

i had one of these in my old Plus. I believe it's an 020 at 16 mhz, twice as fast as the original SE. You can run up to 7.5.5, but 7.1 is recommended because it uses less ram. I have 7.0.1 on my Plus. It can even get on the net. See this url: For those of you who want to get on the web with a browser on a Plus, SE or SE/30, Portable or other 68000 series Mac, here's the URL for the MacWeb browser:

http://www.eden.com/~arena/jagshouse/macweb.hqx

It will work with Macs with 4 megs minimum. Here's the URL for an instruction manual on how to do it:

Enjoy!

You make it sound like you have to destroy something to get into a compact Mac! There are 4 Torx screws holding all they're cases together, and sometimes it is difficult to get the case to open, but you don't have to "crack" anything! I'm just afraid you'll scare people away... DO be *VERY* careful inside a compact Mac though, the CRT can be easily damaged and you can be hit with some high voltage inside there too! A good practice is to let your Mac sit overnight unplugged, then flip the power switch to drain any AC power still remaining. It's not as safe a discharging the CRT, but it's better than nothing.

By the way, I've been an Apple authorized technician since 1988, so if you have any questions on repairs I'll try to lend a hand. I also have access to Apple's Service Source CD-ROMs, so that's a big plus too...

In the case of the MacPlus it's 5 screws, one is under the batter cover. It's often refered to as cracking the case and one of the old toolsets for opening it was called the MacCracker. This toolset included a long Torx T-15 screwdriver and the cracker which is a tool to pry apart the case (crack it). Flipping the power switch will not 'drain any AC power still remaining'. If the computer is unplugged, it won't do much of anything except click. The hazard to which you refer is a stored charge in the CRT itself (although accessable inside the case via the high voltage lead). It is not AC but DC (not that you would be concerned about that as you fly across the room). Leaving the power off for awhile is a good idea, especially for the Mac Plus which doesn't have a bleeder resistor. I think the rule to live by is, if you don't feel comfortable working inside a computer, especially one with a stored high voltage charge, find someone who is.

Subject: A BASIC program.
From: David Emmons

Greetings,

My Rocketed II and I are all set (for now :-) ) but a coworker is looking for a BASIC program that will run on a 1 meg Plus.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
-Dave

MS put out a Basic that should run on a 1 meg Mac. I cannot remember it's commercial name but I have a copy at home, (Perth Western Australia), that's been used about twice. I was hopeing for more than the product could deliver. It is OK and there was a big amount of BASIC apps and files around, circa 1989. Email a Mailing address and it's yours. I also remember that there was a Shareware BASIC at about the same time. EDUCORP may know something about it.

I'm busy trying to fix up my parent's Mac+, and am having troubles getting the 32 bit color Quickdraw extension (it comes with the StyleWriter II install package) to load. Its original type was QD32, and I tried it with this in the system, and extension folders, along with type scri, zsys, and FONT and ffil (the last two in the fonts folder). None of these settings actually seem to load 32 bit quickdraw, even though I know the code is there (I checked with ResEdit).

Does anyone know how this code is installed? Does it only work with system 6?

TIA,
Andrew.

ps: does anyone know where I can get version 4.2 of Iomega's Driver extension? I foolishly deleted it, as I have both bersion 4.3.2 and 5.0.1 (neither of which work on a plus).

pps: the Mac Plus Screen Problem (yess, All In Caps) is actually usually caused by an Apple bug, er... feature. When making the Mac Plus, they decided to cut costs, and used a cheap brand of solder to solder the monitor wires to the rest of the computer. I'm surprised a mac could go this long before blaknking out, as most macs with this cheap solder started blanking out within 6 months of purchase. At the time, Apple did a free repair job for anyone that complained to fix this (there was some sort of a recall made, if I remember correctly). So, if hitting your mac on the top left hand side causes the blank screen to flicker a bit, you probably have this problem, and should take it in to have the wires re-soldered.

Merry Christmas!

Those batteries are stuffed mate. Take a look on the side: They are 3.0 volt lithium batteries. (If they are the snap-in kind they are 3.6 volt). Get ya some new ones (or salvage the ones from your old mother board if they are any good still).

Another little goody is Switcher, it allowed Multiple apps to run on Classic Macs, eg MacWrite and MacPaint, you could then switch between the 2 or more apps without going back to the Finder.

I wonder if there are two programs called Switcher out there? I use a program called Switcher that lets you choose between two or more systems to boot from. In my case, I have two system 6.0.7 folders on my SE hard disk - one is English and one is Japanese. By using Switcher, I can switch between the two. I know this goes against Apple's official warnings not to have two systems, but it works. Another use would be to have something like System 7 Extension Manager functions. Have several systems with different configurations for different tasks and switch between them as needed.

Hi David,

Many years ago, I had the same project to programming in BASIC on a plus. Instead using basic, I started to learn Hypertalk (part of hypercard 1.0, bundled with all Mac Plus (in Canada) ), a better and powerfull language. Hypercard run properly on 1 meg. Plus, with 2 drives, one for hyperCard startup disk, other for stacks.

Hope this help your friend... Have a merry Xmast!

Whoever suggested this -- its' a great idea! I've thought about this myself. If you've got the Web space (and space to store the stuff), I've got some donations for you. And if you want, I'll create a .gif or .jpeg logo for the page.... Please e-mail me at the address above.

i used Netscape 1.1n on my SE for a year and it worked fine so i can't understand why so many people say you can't use it. you can download it from the CSU Monterey Bay webpage:

http://seal.monterey.edu/~netcom/

does anyone know where you can get FreePPP 1.0.5? also; is there anywhere that lists the software that was available for the 128k & the 512k?

thanks,
sk dunn

According to the fine folks at Netscape, NO version of NS (even the pre 1.xx betas) will install or run on a Mac WITHOUT Color QuickDraw (which the SE does not have), so you must have had an SE/30 (which DOES have CQD). I tried this morning to install version 1.1N on several SE's -- one with a '30 PDS upgrade, one 800K/20meg HD model "stocker", and a late one with a '40 PDS upgrade and HD floppy (factory). It would not install on any of these SEs. So I installed it on one of my "older" Macs (an 840av) and then copied it over to the SEs using LapLink, as soon as it loads on all three machines, it crashes. I did install, and run on an SE/30. This is EXACTLY what I thought would happen (but you know I had to test it :)
