I am writing on behalf of a friend who has a 2MB Classic but is
computer-illiterate!

His Classic is on operating system 6.0.7. and he is using WriteNow
v2.0 and Filemaker II v1.0 as his main tools.

Could you please tell me what OS he should upgrade to, and what the
best word processing and database softwares are for this
configuration. Both these applications are used in a university
context (i.e. lots of footnotes, chapters, statistics databases etc)
Is it also worth upgrading to 4MB? Any other tips would be useful,
too.

Thank you for a reply.

Wish to use ClarisWorks 4.0 on SE. No 800k floppies available from Claris, so
installed over network.

However, get Dialog stating that need "68020 or later, color capable, and
System 7.0 or later." I have System 7.1 installed.

Any way to get CW 4 to run on SE? I have CW4 on the other machine (68040),
would like to have all docs run on both.

Subject: Classic II PPP problem

Hello out there! Help!

I have a problem with my Classic II, which I've not been able to
solve. Recently I was tinkering with an SE, trying to set it up to go on
the Net (I've become interested in using classic Macs to do advanced
computing jobs; i.e. to keep using old Macs). I knew to turn off the
computers before making the swap (although I'd heard this was one case
where it was unnecessary), but forgot to turn off the MODEM (a GV
Platinum). Have I fried my bus?

I'm using a MacTCP/Mac PPP setup. Everything works perfectly
except: When I attempt to connect via PPP Config, the Mac PPP status:
Dialing modem... box opens as normal, but then a few seconds later, another
dialog box: PPP wait timeout! Waiting on: CONNECT (if no connection has yet
been made) or Waiting on: OK (if a connection HAS been made) appears. The
only way out is to hit the OK button in the box, which terminates the
connection! This pattern repeats virtually every time I have tried to
connect to my server (many dozens of times), but on just two occasions it
has NOT, everything working normally!

I've tried everything I can think of, including reinstalling all
the communications software, trashing the several comm-related preference
files, fiddling with the settings in the PPP and TCP CPs, rebuilding the
desktop, doing a clean reinstallation of the system (7.5.1) software, turning off all but
essential communications extensions and control panels (Teleport, MacTCP,
PPP; I can get a connection, but the problem persists), running Norton disk
doctor (no problems). I've also swapped the modem to the printer port (the
printer works fine), but to no effect. The modem itself is OK, I'm using it
here on my wife's LC II to send this mail; I get identical results on my
machine with her modem.

I love my Classic II! Someone please tell me I have a software
problem (and how to fix it!). If I HAVE fried my bus, can it be fixed, or
must I trash my otherwise perfect machine?

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Long live old Macs!

minimum requirements for the net
--------------------------------

MacPlus, (2.5-)4 MB RAM, 20 MB harddisk, (2400-)14400 modem, System 7.0*
and MacTCP 2.0.6 are the practical minimum requirements for PPP
connections. Only MacPPP 2.0.1 and InterSLIP 1.0.1 currently work on 68000
macs (SimplePPP, Sonic PPP, InterPPP, MacSLIP or FCRppp might work but I
haven't tried them).

MacTCP is included in System 7.5. Apple dealers sell it but a cheaper and
better way is to buy "The Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh" (Adam Engst,
Hayden Books) book where MacTCP, among other utilities, is included. MacTCP
2.0.x to 2.0.6 updaters:

<ftp://ftp.info.apple.com//Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Macintosh/Networking-Communications/Other_N-C/MacTCP_2.0.6_Update.sea.hqx>

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/conn/mactcp-206-updt.hqx>

MacPPP 2.0.1:

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/conn/mac-ppp-201.hqx>

InterSLIP 1.0.1:

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/conn/inter-slip-installer-101.hqx>

On 68000 macs telnet-, ftp-, mail-, and news-apps like NCSA Telnet, Fetch,
Anarchie 1.6.0, Eudora, and NewsWatcher work fine. With MacPlus you can't
use control-keys in NCSA Telnet (in ZTerm you can use command instead of
control).

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/ncsa-telnet-27b4.hqx>

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/newswatcher-212.hqx>

On 68000 macs NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3, MacWeb 1.00A3.2 and v2.0 work. MacWeb
1.00A3.2 works better than v1.1.1 E which crashes when saving prefs. MacWeb
2.0 has more features than v1.00A3.2 but it is also slower and buggier.
NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3 can display in-line graphics but with MacWeb you must use
an external helper (click and hold on an image icon, choose "Retrieve to
Disk" from the pop-up menu and view with GIFConverter or GIFwatcher DA).

Q: How can I get MacWeb 1.00A3.2 to automatically show GIFs on a 4MB 68000
mac?
A: Usually MacWeb tries to open GIFs internally; on 68000 macs this is not
possible and an external viewer like GIFConverter is needed. However,
GIFConverter doesn't really fit into the max 900K RAM that MacWeb leaves.
There is an old DA "GIFwatcher DA" that can be transformed into an
automatically launched app via "DA Piggyback 1.2" which takes less memory
than GIFConverter. Then change in MacWeb's prefs' Edit/Suffixes "gif" to
MIME type "image/pict" and Edit/Helpers MIME type's "image/pict" helper to
GIFWatcher. Turn File/Preferences/Format/Autoload images off; you must view
each GIF separately with no clickable links.

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/gst/grf/gif-watcher-212.hqx>

With only 1 MB RAM, floppy drive(s) and System 6 you can connect via a
terminal emulator like ZTerm and use unix apps like pine, tin, ftp, ncftp,
sz, rz, and lynx for mail, news, file transfer and www. With ZTerm you can
use command-key instead of control when using MacPlus. To save disk space
on those 800K floppies install the minimum System 6.0.x that ZTerm
requires. You can trash all files except System and Finder, delete
unnecessary fonts and DAs from the System file with Font/DA Mover and
delete PPC code from ZTerm with Strip Fat to save even more disk space.

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/term/zterm-10b3.hqx>

If you really want to use System 6 and connect via PPP I've heard that
following software versions might work: System 6.0.5-6.0.8, MacTCP 2.0.6,
MacPPP 2.0.1, NCSA Telnet 2.6, Fetch 3.0.1, Eudora 1.3.1, NewsWatcher
2.0d13m01, Internews 1.1, MacTCP Watcher 1.1.0, Valuefax 2.0.9 (older
versions of these apps may use less memory).

<ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com//quest/mac/eudora/1.3/eudora131.hqx>
<ftp://ftp.brown.edu/pub/mac/NewsWatcher/NewsWatcher_2.0d13m01.sea.hqx>

If you need to save disk space unfatten the apps with Strip Fat, for
example:

<ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/cfg/strip-fat.hqx>

Use a local info-mac mirror, if possible:

I have been able to download the latest version of MacWeb, but it doesn't come
with any documantation on how to use it. Does anyone know a site where I can get
such documentation? Again, many thanks in advance. Miles Anderson

Apologies to the Classic Macs list, but I thought that sokmeone on this
list may be able to help with this Radius Rocket Stage II Booster
question, or someone else may have the smae questions. Thank you
wizards.

Dear Radius,
I have been running a Radius Rocket Stage II Booster on a Mac II for the
last several years. At one point, the rocket crashed and I was no longer
able to access the Stage II. There are three things that I am trying to
de-bug, and I hope that you can help me.

1. On start up of the rocket, file sharing asks to connect to the sahred
disk "Gig" and gives the name "OP-Q610" as the name of the registered
user trying to share. I cannot find this user in users & groups or
anywhere. I have tried changing the name of the user to "Rocket" which
is the name of the Radius Rocket, but to no avail. Question: where do I
find this user file to change the name? Why does this not show up in the
users and groups control panel?

2. On start up, the Stage II Booster control panel (extension?) icon has
a red bar through it. I cannot find a Stage II Booster extension in the
system extensions folder. Should there be one?

3. When I open the SCSI 2 Booster control panel, the Master Switch is
turned on, but greyed out, even though I have the Gig drive properly
connected to the Rocket board. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

This trick seems only to apply to _local_ html-files and GIFs already on
the HD. For some reason MacWeb 1.00A3.2 refuses to launch an external
viewer with files grabbed from the net.

BTW, I briefly tried MacWeb 2.0 but downgraded back to v1.00A3.2 because
v2.0 was _very_ slow to paginate and quite often screen draws were messed
up with solid black covering the text.

NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3 can show clickable inline GIFs but it is also slower and
buggier than MacWeb 1.00A3.2.

I have been reading Classic Macs Digest for some time and would like to pass
on to other readers some information I have found valuable in using "Classic
Macs." A company called Pre-Fix (formerly Soft Solutions) sells several
repair and diagnostic books for the classic Macs. Particularly usefull are
the books by Larry Pina. They also carry the "Guide to the Macintosh Family
Hardware" book which documents internal hardware features, pinouts and
diagrams for Plus through IIfx. They also sell component parts as well as the
Pina beefy Plus Analog board. They are helpful and don't do DOS or Windows.
Their reference books and parts source are a must for keeping our "classic
Macs" going. I don't have stock in the company. I just appreciate their efforts.

ANy suggestions on how to get my NEC 3x cdrom to work on my
MAC II? Being a MAC newbie I see it being looked at and
even see it in SCSI probe 3.1 and MT Everything 1.1.1b,
but no CD icon is to be found on my desktop.

I've got a NEC 3x "clamshell" too, for my Classic II. All you need to do is
download the NEC CD drivers (software) and run the install; the driver
files are available on the NEC website; but if you have any problems I'll
be happy to email you the drivers as an attachment. (The CD won't mount
with SCSI-probe, etc. --at least, it wouldn't for me.) The NEC CDROM works
just fine w/the Mac too, btw.
