mac tries to read the disk, happy macs for a second, and sad macs, with
an error 0F0064.

What does this mean? Do I need to find a 400k drive and THEN it will

It means:

OF=Exception
0064=couldn't read system file into memory.

Maybe try a different version of software? Might have something to do
with how the floppy was formatted by the plus.

I wanted to use PB duo 250 in duodock as an external hd to my desktop mac.
In PB the "PowerBook setup" control panels was showing that it's capable to
emulate HD mode. I got 30pins(square)-to-50 female SCSI cable, which puts
PB160 into the HD mode perfectly, but it doesn't happen with DUo plugged
itno the Duodock. Any help appreciated.

Besides I noticed that if I unplug the monitor from the Dock (with duo
inserted) it doesn't startup properly - internal hd in Duo just stops in
the middle of the process. I tried to boot holding shift, but it didn't
help. I'm running 7.1 on it.

Thanks in advance,
Dmitri

1. Can the Classic's memory be upgraded

I'm sure someone else here has the specifics, but a Classic can be
upgraded to at least 4 MB.

2. If the memory were upgraded would the beast run System 7.x and which
one and how might one get a hold of it and install it?

Yup. System 7.0.1 (the last free MacOS) is still available from Apple's
ftp servers, though on a 2400 bps modem, that will be a _long_ download.
You might also try a Simon Fraser (or other local) Mac user group to see
if they have a disk set they could give you or sell you (for the cost of
the floppies), or advertise on this mailing list (?) or the Net for
someone to run copies off _their_ fast Internet connection (or maybe they
just have a set hanging around)

3. If I looked for a used inkjet or laser printer, to run on my system as
it is now, what should I look for and how much might it cost?

I would recommend an HP DeskWriter. They are very simple mechanically;
wear like iron; print very well; and, here in Minnesota, can often be
purchased for around $75 if you shop around. The only disadvantage of the
DW (or any inkjet) is that they are comparatively expensive to run
(compared to dot-matrix and laser-type printers). You could also consider
an original Apple StyleWriter, but IMHO they don't wear as well as the
HPs.

4. Would I be better off to just save my pennies for a whole newer used
system? If so, what system? Some friends advise me to go to a Windoze.
The lower cost is tempting, but I sweated blood to learn to use a C64, and
I head a fairly hard time learning this system and I dread yet another.
I am afraid it will drive me crazy, I still haven't figured out how to use
VersaTerm.

I supported VersaTerm for three years and am still not sure I ever got
the hang of it <G>. If your system is not unusably slow, continue
upgrading it for a while. Let's say you expand to 4 MB RAM and buy a
DeskWriter for $100. You can't buy another Mac any better than yours for
$200. I wouldn't start buying bigger hard disks or accelerator boards,
though ...

Just don't fall for the lie that Windows systems are cheaper. They are
cheaper because they are not Macs. I don't know if you use them, but the
Mac's CloseView and Easy Access accessibility software have no parallel
in the Windows world. The Mac is easier to set up and run -- and I can
guarantee you would not be satisfied with the Windows performance of an
Intel box with 2 MB RAM and a 40 MB hard disk. Stick with the Mac -- it's
a better machine. And you already know how to use it.

what printer, modem, newer Mac?

I've seen 14,400 modems available for around $35 used -- name brands like
Supra, USR, PPI. You really need to evaluate what it is you want your Mac
to do. If all you need is a more up-to-date version of what you have,
spend the money on RAM and a faster modem and maybe upgrade to Word 5.1
-- still won't be too slow on your Classic and offers more features. Word
5.1 is still a bit of a lingua franca in the Mac world anyway. If you
really want color and CD-ROMs, you will need another Mac. I just bought a
new PowerPC Mac (well, a clone); my IIci will be going to my mom -- her
first computer (aside from the Windows box at work) and more than
adequate for the word processing, Net surfing, and Quicken she plans to
use it for. You might want to consider a IIci or maybe something in the
Performa 47x series: fast 68040, CD-ROM built in, color.

Good luck. Let me know if you have other questions.

Greetings Classic Mac Readers,

Please excuse this long missive. Or else, skip it.

I am a physically, cognitively, and financially challenged reader of this
list. Though I have been a computer user since the early eighties, and a
Mac user simce '89, my skills are merely at the level a a barely computer
literate person. This means that inspite of my best efforts, I am
presently in danger of falling below the level of functionality. I hope
some reader can help me with some advice concerning what minimal steps I
can take in order to be able to keep doing what I do with my system now and
maybe improve things a bit.

Since '89 I have been using a Mac Classic 2/40 running System 6.0.7 and
Finder 6.1.7. I also use an E -Mac 2400 bps modem, Eudora version
1.3.1+ps+sc4 (I haven't the faintest clue as to what the stuff after the
'+' means, I am just reading the 'about' panel but I suspect it has to do
with some customising that the system people at my service provider, Simon
Fraser University, did), Zterm, and MS Word 4. I also have Versaterm
4.1.1 installed, but I find it a bit complicated to use and use the Zterm
to reach bulletin boards instead. Someone has given me a Sheikosha
SP-1000AP dot matrix printer without documentation which seems to work only
when connected to the modem port and I cannot find ribbons for it any
more.

I write papers and correspondence with my word proccessor. A word
proccessor is a neccessity for writing for me as my spelling and
punctuation is miserable without it. I use the pay laser printers at the
campus computer lab to print hard copies. I deal with several
listserv/majordomo lists by e-mail with my Eudora through the UNIX based
campus system.

Mostly I am happy with my system the way it is.
Sure I would like to have a newer system, but I'm not going to be earning
money any time soon and I have to make do.

Unfortunately the system on campus keeps being upgraded. Commercial
service providers are already technically and financially beyond reach.
My Eudora stopped connecting once already and I thought I was banished from
Cyberheaven once and for all for having a slow modem. After about six
months I was able to get the neccessary new script for Eudora to sign on
to the upgraded system. It took this long, because most tech support
people on campus I asked said it was impossible and advised I get a 14,000
bps modem.

*I believe your Mac can handle speeds of at least 9600bps. I have an SE and it
handles a 14,000bps modem just fine. They lie.*

But to use a highspeed modem one needs to have System 7.x they
said and for that I'd need a newer machine. Most people who are smart
enough to be not bothered by steepish learning curves and who have enough
money have little sympathy for dolts like me.

I am afraid I will not survive the next upgrade. Printing too, is becoming
more difficult. I suspect the next upgrade of the "Wordstation" will drop
MS Word in favour of some other word processor which will stop me from
printing there.

So here are my questions.

1. Can the Classic's memory be upgraded and how far and what will it
likely cost around Vancouver, Canada?

*I found a place by me that up-graded my SE's memory from 1 to four megs for
$35. And installed it for free.*

2. If the memory were upgraded would the beast run System 7.x and which
one and how might one get a hold of it and install it?

*I would suggest at least four. I'm not sure the max on your machine, but at
least four should do ya fine. It will run system 7. You could set up TCP/IP
and run MacWeb, ircle, telnet, NewsWatcher, etc... To get ahold of system 7 go
to http://mirrors.apple.com.*

3. If I looked for a used inkjet or laser printer, to run on my system as
it is now, what should I look for and how much might it cost? (I went to
a Future Shop, where the salesman claimed there weren't any printers that
would run without System 7) I want reasonable black and white copy and a
modest access to fonts including central european ones. I also want a
machine that requires little manual dexterity to handle -- as I say, I am
physically challenged.

*With 2 more megs ram you could use the Apple Stylewriter 1200 I believe. A
great printer.*

4. Would I be better off to just save my pennies for a whole newer used
system? If so, what system? Some friends advise me to go to a Windoze.
The lower cost is tempting, but I sweated blood to learn to use a C64, and

*Don't be temped by the dark side!!*

I head a fairly hard time learning this system and I dread yet another. I
am afraid it will drive me crazy, I still haven't figured out how to use
VersaTerm.

5. Any general advice you might have. One path I am considering is
getting a printer ASAP, and maybe a used 9600 bps modem after. And later
getting some more powerful used Mac, I'd really love to have CDRom. But
what printer, modem, newer Mac?

*I hooked up my old 2 speed apple CD rom drive to my SE and it worked just
fine. The only trouble with this is that it is almost impossible to find stuff
that will run with it. I have two programs that do work though.*

I thank all of you in advance for any ideas.

Tibor Benke

*good luck*

upgrade to 4 megs max, unlimited hard drive possibilities

Sys 7.1, get it from the Apple web site.

3. If I looked for a used inkjet or laser printer, to run on my system as

That's BS. They don't know whatr they are talking about. Get a used
Deskwriter (Hewlett Packard, $50-75) or an older Stylewriter.

I want reasonable black and white copy and a
modest access to fonts including central european ones. I also want a

You can use a 14.4, but it will work at 9600 baud due to SE
restrictions. You can also use Word 5.1a (although it's slow) on a 4
meg, sys 7 Mac. You may want to buy a used LC ($300) or IIsi ($500
w/monitor). Faster, will run Netscape, lots of other color apps.

I thank all of you in advance for any ideas.

What version System is appropriate? I have 1.0, 1.1, 3.2 and 5.0.

System 3.2 and the HD 20 extension and an external 800k floppy drive.

Can I copy the ROMS from my Plus and use an 800k drive? Do I need to
upgrade my RAM to do it, and if I do, can I hack the original board to
get 512k on it, or even a meg?

Yes, to all of the above. There is a hack to upgrade the board to 512k,
but you need to replace all of the memory chips and the add an chip to
decode the extra logic required to drive 'em. You could also try to find
one of the upgrade cards that had RAM on the card and bypassed the RAM
on the motherboard.

I have an LC that has worked perfectly for many years that is until the
mouse button failed.. it made a flat click and stayed jammed in the down
position, I a have tried gently tapping the mouse on the side but it refuses
to budge back to its non depressed position, so my question is how do i take
it too bits and replace the spring mechanism?

there are just a few screws on the underside of the apple mouse to
remove. Sometimes the microswitch dies inside the mouse or the hinge on
the button breaks.

Hello Classic MacPeoples!

I was at a computer fair yesterday and as usual, the NO REFUND NO MACS
sign was out front. You can imagine my delight to find a baby Mac
sitting at a table. Closer inspection revealed it to be a 128k mac- in
seemingly okay condition.

I toted the machine home, $20 later, and fired it up. There seems to be
a problem with the floppy drive. It won't stay in the "up" position. I
made a 400k System 1.0 disk with the help of my Quadra 800 and my Mac
Plus, and i managed to get the disk to sit corectly in the drive by
holding the drive open and insering the disk, then letting it close. The
Mac X'ed the disk and tried to eject it. So the disk drive is dead.

Next step was to remove the floppy drive and connect an Apple 800k floppy
w/button eject (from my Apple IIgs) to the floppy port. Now the little
mac tries to read the disk, happy macs for a second, and sad macs, with
an error 0F0064.

What does this mean? Do I need to find a 400k drive and THEN it will
work? Where do I get a 400k drive, or can I use an 800k drive as a 400k
drive?

What version System is appropriate? I have 1.0, 1.1, 3.2 and 5.0.

Several people will jump on this but here's my uneducated reply. The memory
in a 128k is sordered on board. You probably can undo it and put 512 in but
that may be all you can do. The 400k drives were not the best drives in the
world. They were under constant pressure because the 128 had to access it
constantly In fact lots of early computer hardware lacked durability. If it
moves it wears. I think you have to upgrade it to a 512e which means new
roms. You now have a MacPlus with 512 ram (assuming a memory upgrade). System
2 is the latest system Apple recommends. Others in this folder can tell you
if the wiring is different, etc.

My thought is leave the dang thing like it is. Get a rebuilt 400 drive from
SUN and enjoy. Find out what computer life really was like in the
beginning.

expect to pay for it?

2) i salvaged a 340mb scsi drive from an old ibm machine. can i use it in
