Subject: LC trouble

I recently purchased an LC online. After trying to get it to work with
my 15" Multisync, was told they would only work with 14" monitors or
smaller.

I purchased a Belgin Mac to VGA adapter and hooked it up to an IBM 13"
monitor. Here's my problem; the monitor comes on to a blank screen, the
LC chimes and powers up, I can hear it. Then nothing else happens.
Everything seems to be running. Floppies are ejected immediately, not on
start up.

I own a Performa 6230, and think I know quite a bit about my machine.
The LC thing has me stumped. Anyone?

I'm trying to make MacWWW work on a Plus.
I connect to my ISP, then start MacWWW. It displays
the splash screen (aka About Box) , which I dismiss.

Then I get this error message:
"Unable to access document."

I have tried using the default URL,
also http://home.netscape.com/index.html.
No luck.

Also tried to access a local disk file, foo.htm.
No luck.

Any suggestions?

Subject: Checkerboard display on SE/30

Nick wonders about an intermittent checkerboard display on boot, that is
resolved with restarting and persuasive caress of the cabinet.

In Larry Pina's book Mac Classic & SE Repair and Upgrade Secrets, he mentions
this behavior twice. In the SE, it could refer to a bad logic board filter
U2B, with bad pin readings on 3,5,7 and 9. For the SE/30, this would be the
RP2 filter. As for Mac Classics, Larry discusses this problem when the ROM
chip becomes loose. The OEM socket was a single-wipe socket, where the
contact is only on one side of the chip pin. He goes into detail on
desoldering and resoldering with a dual-wipe socket, which holds the pins
more securely.

This book covers the most common failures of these computers, and is very
helpful. It's available from Peachpit Press, 2414 6th St. Berkeley, CA 94710
(800) 283-9444. The Dead Mac Scrolls is another must have book by Larry,
that I have not yet obtained. Luckily, I haven't broken things on my IIci the
same way I mucked up my SE/30.

Hello fellow classic macster's

My other ? is the Plus doesn't have a Keyboard. Does anyone know where
I can find a Keyboard for a Plus. I didn't know they plugged into the
front of the machine, with that weird port. If someone has one for
sale, Id like to purchase it.

I have a source for Mac Plus keyboards and mice. Let me know what you
want, either the std. kybd, or the "extended' one, that is, with te
numerice keypad on the side. Some are the "classic" mac color, beige,
otehrs are platinum. I assume you need the cable, as the std. phone cable
will not work.

I will have to check on the prices, but i'll assume they are aound $30.00
with packing and shipping.

I can ship them to a UPS shippable address in the US.

Also, I can get some mice.
Let me know.

Does anyone know of a worthy charity (or individual) who needs and would
accept an ImageWriter II printer? It hasn't been used in over a year since
I picked up a used LaserWriter. The ImageWriter II still works fine, but I
don't need it and it is taking up space I do need. I don't consider its

I have a Mac Plus that has a screen problem. When I start my Mac, the
screen works fine. But when I enter a boot disk in the 800k drive,
most of the time the screen goes blank for about ten minutes. Then
it lights up and I can see the desktop. After this the screen works
the way it should work. When I boot from a hard disk, the screen
mostly works fine. But as soon as I use the 800 K- drive, the screen
goes black. Apparently there is some connection with diskette-drive
activity and the screen in the first ten minutes. When the screen is
warm(?), all is normal again. What can I do to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for your answer

You prob have a bad power supply. Buy a new Mac Plus for about $15 at the
local Goodwill. Or buy a couple and swap out the power supplies or just
keep the bad Mac for parts.

I bought a 128K for $6.98 (!), and then bought the mouse and keyboard for
another $25 or so. I'd like to try to get it up and running, but am
having trouble. I grabbed System 1.0 from some archive (I've lost the
bookmark, dammit!), but then faced the problem of putting it on a 400K
disk the 128K would understand.

I tried reformatting a HD (1.4MB) disk on a Power Mac using an old, old
reformatting program called Fast Formatter (available at

http://www6.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/mac/infomac.html?fcode=MC11682

But the 128K didn't recognize it: Either there's a problem with trying to
create a 400K disk using the Power Mac's SuperDrive or the 128K's drive
is simply busted.

Any thoughts? Or even any ideas on where I could get working 400K disks
without too much trouble?

Does anyone have any recommendations for using a Hewlett-Packard DeskJet
870Cxi printer with a Mac SE? I have two computers....

Look into PowerPrint Pro from Infowave (formerly GDT Softworks). This
provides 300dpi drivers for all the DeskJets, plus an AppleTalk box for
networking. We're using one with an H-P OfficeJet 1150, giving us a nice

Digest 970904 had two questions about the Mac Plus not recognizing an
external hard drive. The Mac Plus had a relatively slow SCSI port. Most
older drives must be formatted with a 3:1 interleave so they don't
overwhelm the SCSI port. You should format the hard drive while it is
attached to the Plus.

I've got an LCII that displays something I've never seen before.

When it boots up, it displays the normal Happy Mac image.
But inside that image in very small text, below the smile, it says
'VALUE 0401'

(sort of like this...)

-------
* *
\_/
VALUE
0401
-------

Does anyone have any idea what this means?

I've tried everything I can think of...change battery, reinstall
a few versions of the MacOS, Zap Pram, rebuild desktop, etc. etc.
I think the happy mac is displayed from the ROM, so none of this
should have changed anything and did not. but what is it?

Subject: Color Classic

We just resurrected a Color Classic (10/80) we had laying around, and wish
to make it a bit speedier.

I have looked at all the list archives to find an accelerator that works,
but have conflicting opinions from the posts.

We have several SE's (4/275/800K) with MicroMac 32MHz accelerators (and
Compact Virtual), and have not had a problem with them EXCEPT with
formatting disks (we have to turn the caches off, and sometimes they just
don't want to go off).

Has anybody here had any experience with the MicroMac ThunderPro (I think
that's what it's called), it's a `30 chip running at 50MHz and has room for
16 megs of RAM (max of 26 megs RAM with the 10 already installed) on the
board (cost $249.00).

We also inquired into a Performa 550 logic board (also used in the CC II),
which is a `30 chip running at 33MHz and a full 32bit data path with a max
of 36 megs of RAM possible (cost $350.00). Has anybody had any experience
with this logic board (i.e., a Performa 550, or CC II)

Anybody care to recommend something I have overlooked (it was said in the
archives that the Newer Tech `40 accelerator won't let you use more than
256 colors, and we want to stay at 16 bit, so that's out). Any other boards
out there that you have personal experience with and can post the pro's and
cons of?

Subject: SE/30 problems

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a Mac SE/30 which will replace my SE and so far I am
quite delighted with it., however, in my attempt to put it on line as is my
SE, the necessary software (MacTCP, Config PPP and PPP were loaded in the
machine and the necessary ISP numbers were inserted in the proper
locations. I was then able to connect with my ISP and I was on line.
Through Eudora (previously installed) I was able to send e-mail which was
delivered to recipient. I used Netscape (also previously installed) to surf
the net and all was sweetness and light. Then things started to happen.
After sending 3 fonts from my Performa to the SE/30 via Eudora attachment,
I attempted to retrieve the fonts from the attachments folder but when I
clicked "Check Mail", I was asked for my password which was correctly given
but I was immediately cut off line. My ISP I thought. Later in the day I
could not only access my mail box, I was unable to access my ISP without a
password which, when given, I was immediately rejected. In my following
attempts to get on line I was not even allowed the access of the modem. It
refused to dial up. Instead I was shown two windows. The first, "MacPPP
Status": "Terminal Mode". The second window was titled "PPP terminal
session". There is a blank enclosure below that, then at the very bottom,
the usual cancel and ok buttons.

Can anyone tell me what happened to my machine to act this way and tell me
how I can correct it. I would be most appreciative.

I would be remiss at this time not to offer my appreciation to our new
moderator, Michael Connally, for the splendid job he has been doing with
the Classic Post. I surely missed it while it was on hiatus and I am sure
most of us look forward to every informative issue.

Trying to help two friends who own a Classic. They'd like access to email
via a shell acct. I gave 'em a GV teleport gold II modem. (Their Classic
has System 5 and 2 mb RAM.) The account is set up and working fine, at
least as far as I can tell. After many failed attempts, I dialed in on my
own computer and everything looked fine. On their system, though, when we
dial in via Zterm (v .9) we can only type a login and a password before
gibberish and wierd words start scrolling across the screen. Seems to be
English, but with lots of characters transposed or garbled for some reason
no one at the ISP can figure out. Been over and over this with the ISP and
no luck on fixing zterm settings so far. So...

A) Any especially suspicious settings on Z term that I should experiment
with?

B) Is there an easier way to get my friends access to a simple shell
account for email only?

Many many thanks for any advice or a reference to a specific month in the

What you might be seeing is garbage from the modem. The GV Teleport
II Gold needs System 7x inorder to use the Error Correcting and Data
Compression.

Subject: Re: How to connect compact macs to ethernet

I'm updating 68000-mac-faq on how to connect compact macs with no slots for
ethernet cards to ethernet.

http://www.walli.uwasa.fi/~mhaveri/68000.txt

Here is my draft for the faq:

Compact macs like the Plus can be connected to ethernet network with Asante
SCSI ethernet adapter. Note that some SCSI ethernet adapters may not work
because unlike other macs the Plus doesn't supply current to the SCSI port.
You will need 4MB RAM to be able to load the extra extensions needed for
networking and to run programs. Another option is to connect to the
ethernet via a LocalTalk bridge.

Any comments? Also URLs for vendors are welcome.

One comment: SE/30 and SCSI NICs are very expensive. SCSI adapters are also
slow. You are probably better off if you find a Color Classic or an LC that
supports LCI or CS NICs.

Re: Another SE/30 question:

There's a simm next to the 8 memory slots called ROMSIMM1. It is taller
and appears to have 64 pins. Is this Cache RAM? VRAM? DO I even need it
on the board?

ROMSIMMs hold ROM (Read Only Memory) which contain software that the
computer uses in order to startup and also part of the of the operating
system.

Some Macs require a ROMSIMM be inserted while others have the slot to allow
a future upgrade. The later have ROM on the Motherboard.

The latches that hold it in place are broken so I will have to use a
rubberband or something else to ensue it stays in the slot.

Thanks all!

Michael Bellman

[MODERATOR]

I am under the impression that in this computer (and the IIsi) the
ROM SIMM is present in certain computers and is in those computers
needed for proper operation.

I've never heard of one being in a IIsi. To my knowledge Apple has never
produced a ROMSIMM upgrade. The only ROM Upgrades I know of are the 128K
ROMs and 800K floppy upgrade for a 512K and the ROM / SWIM / FDHD upgrade
for MacIIs & SEs.

Apple's word on the subject is: "If it's there, don't take it
out. If it's not there, don't put it in."

Re: HD from IIcx to Quadra 950

Guys -

I'm trying to install a 80mb hd from a deceased IIcx into a
Quadra 950, but no luck. I've got power to it (verified), and the
scsi cable (position A) to it, but when I boot it from floppy, it does
not recognize it or find it.

I know for a fact that this HD is ok, b/c my Classic found it no problem
when I swapped it out.

The only differece that I can tell is that the Quadra has an additional
little cable to it from a little black box that you can change the numbers from
0 thru 9 on it....is this some sort of thing that assigns a value to the HD or
something? No one here seems to know what to do with the extra cable....

Does the Quadra already have a harddisk. If so then both are probably set
to SCSI ID 0. This is what the black box is for. Alternatively SCSI IDs
are set by jumpers on the drive itself. No two devices on the same SCSI
bus can have the same SCSI ID. The Mac itself is always SCSI ID 7. Apple
normally makes the included harddisk SCSI ID 0 (so both drives are likely
ID 0). Just try changing one of the ID jumpers on one of the drives. The
markings vary but usually include either 0,1,2 or 1,2,4

This may or may not fix your problem...

One used Mac Plus I bought had a problem where it was fine until it started
the floppy and then it would restart. I found that the +5V supply was low.
When the floppy drive started it caused the supply voltage to go to low
triggering a reset circuit that reset the processor. I fixed it by
adjusting the +5V supply back up to 5.00V.

To adjust the supply, remove the back cover. Be careful doing this as
there is both power line voltage and 10,000V (or so) present inside. If
you're not experienced working around high voltage try to find someone who
is. There are several electrolytic capacitors around the power connector
on the logic board. With the power on, probe around until you find one
that reads around 5V. On the analog board there is an adjustment marked
+5V. Using a non-conductive screwdriver, adjust this till the voltmeter
reads 5.00.

Subject: Classic II vs PPC Mac

Hi folks. I wanted to switch from Windows to Macs in late 1995. I made this
decision slowly. I tried out the Mac LC IIs at the campus computer clusters
off and on for six months. They seemed stable and easy to use.

I went to the various computer stores. I wanted to buy two Performa 578s,
one for work, one for home. I loved the one-piece design (still do). I was
told, "DON'T buy an '040 Mac!!! Copland is coming! You'll need a PPC Mac to
run Copland. DON'T buy something that will be orphaned in less than a
year!!!"

Well, the salesmen scared me into buying PPC Macs. I bought a Power Mac 7100
for work and a Performa 6214 for home. I have been thoroughly unimpressed
with their stability and performance. Stability is horrible for both
machines. I've had every OS since 7.5. Every upgrade promised more
stability. That was bunk. They are all unstable, even with the minimum set
of extensions. Even with 7.6.1 they both crash at least once a day,
sometimes four times a day. I've tried all of the suggested fixes (rebuild
desktop, zap PRAM, re-install System software, Conflict Catcher) without
success.

I have a 7500, IIsi, IIci, SE/30, SE and assorted Pluses. All have been
generally very stable on software. I've had times when some INIT has
caused trouble until I was able to locate the problem. Some software has /
is a problem. Netscape and Internet Exploder are the two champs in that
department. But the computer and OS have worked very well. I can't say
what's wrong with your systems as you gave no indication what's wrong and
seem more interested in ranting than getting help.

I help out in the computer lab at my daughters' school where we have about
200 Macs, 97% of which are Power Macs running System 7.5.1 or higher.
Although we do have some crashes they are uncommon.

I suspect you have a problem with an INIT and/or an application. If you
want help, try detailing what you have (System version, INITs, commonly
used applications and something about specific crashes). If you just want
to rant, try a Windoze mailing list or newsgroup.

All I can conclude is that Apple deserves all of the financial trouble it's
in. They sold a lot of people a lot of unstable PPC systems, and they
deserve to lose business. That's why I didn't buy OS 8. They promised me
more stability with 7.5 release 2, 7.6 and 7.6.1 but didn't deliver.

You obviously have a serious problem in your computer setup. Changing
operating system versions isn't going to make it go away.

I've never tried Word 6 on anything but my Power Mac but I have used 5.1 on

Hello !

I have two other questions to ask you :

1) Which version of the system did you download ? (The Mac Plus may
not work with version over 6.X.X., the 512 K with even older
ones.)

The Plus will work with v7.5.5 (you need 4M RAM though)
